The best thing about infrared photography is that you have a reason to take your camera out when the light is bad. Bright sunshine with harsh shadows is horrible for normal photography, but these are perfect conditions to take photos outside the visible spectrum.
Infrared photography is not simple and I still have a lot to learn, but thanks to digital cameras it is now much easier than it used to be. However, I do recommend to use a converted camera instead of a regular one with filters. Although the converted camera still requires filters, it will allow you to take pictures handheld.
And it is not expensive at all. I got a spare NEX camera converted for a very reasonable amount by RedvisionUK on ebay. I highly recommend them!
